Ma7 - How to Calculate Area and Perimeter
VIDEOS INCLUDE LINKS TO WORKSHEETS
What's the difference between Area and Perimeter, how do you remember which is which, and how are they calculated?
These videos start by introducing how to measure Perimeter and Area, beginning with simple rectangles, then working through triangles and compound shapes.
Once your child understands how these work, they will be challenged to find the areas and/ or perimeters of shapes where some of the lengths have been left out, so logic is required before calculating the area or perimeter, and to compare the areas or perimeters of different shapes.
Part of the Government Framework for Maths, Content Domain References:
3M7 measure the perimeter of simple 2–D shapes
4M7a measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres
5M7a measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres
6M7a recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa
4M7b find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares
5M7b calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares), and including using standard units, square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2) and estimate the area of irregular shapes
6M7b calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles
6M7c recognise when it is possible to use the formulae for the area of shapes
